Great Sand Dunes Engagement Photos are maybe one of the wildest and most epic backgrounds you could pick. To make sure you nail it, make sure you spend a little time planning your session and understand what you’ll need to prepare for.

From the parking lot, you’ll have a bit of a hike to get away from the crowds before you begin your Great Sand Dunes engagement photos. During the Spring and into the summer you will probably have to wade through a small river of snowmelt close to the parking lot. So I usually go barefoot the whole time so I don’t need to carry a towel or worry about having issues with sand in my shoes.

Couples should consider this too. I recommend carrying as few extra items as possible and being prepared to be barefoot if your shoes are making the hike difficult.

Heavily tracked areas of the dunes are closest to the parking lot and in my opinion, those are the ugliest areas. Head the other way and you’ll find much more pristine dunes with beautiful smooth curves and barely a footprint in sight. Plus, you’ll have the place to yourself.

If you are going there in May or June, be prepared to face the craziest mosquitoes I have ever encountered. I used to live on the east coast and I got occasional mosquito bites. I left the dunes with huge, swollen, itchy bites all over my legs that kept itching for several days after. That sucked. But in the end, the photos were worth the short-term discomfort!
